Obituary for Ruby Stidham Fitzpatrick

Ruby Stidham Fitzpatrick, age 98, a former resident of Hazard, KY, passed away May 13, 2018 at her residence in Lexington, Kentucky. She was the daughter of the late Allen D. and Rosa Plummer Stidham of Hazard and was preceded in death by her husband, John D. Fitzpatrick II, and son, John D. Fitzpatrick III. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Viola Collins, half-brothers Charlie Plummer, Everett Plummer, and half-sisters, Iva Knoblet, Bessie Peters, and Gladys Jones.

Survivors include her sons, Thomas A. (Betsy Burch) of Richmond, and James R. (Jane) of Lexington. Also surviving are her grandchildren: Katherine J. Fitzpatrick, Lexington, Allen J. Fitzpatrick, Washington, D.C., Jonathan F. Fitzpatrick, Maysville; Stephanie Hall, Paulina Jones (Joey), and Eunice Holland (Brad) of Hazard; four greatgrandchildren: Jennifer Hall and Emma, Sawyer and Finley Jones; one great-great grandson, Bentley Hall; and daughter-in-law, Genevee Fitzpatrick, all of Hazard.

Ruby was born in Canyon Falls, Lee County, KY on April 25, 1920, and soon after her birth, moved to Hazard where she lived most of her life before moving to Lexington to be closer to family. She worked during the 1940’s at the A & P in downtown Hazard leaving her employment at the end of W.W. II to raise her family. During the mid-1960’s, she purchased and operated Broadway Grocery at the corner of Broadway and Newland Streets where she greeted and served many adults and children in the area for over 25 years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and active in Beta Sigma Phi. In Lexington, she was a member of St. Hubert’s Episcopal Church and St. Hubert’s Episcopal Church Women (ECW).

Visitation will be held in Hazard, KY on Friday, May 18 at Maggard’s Mountain View Chapel, 352 Roy Campbell Drive from 11 am to 1:00 pm. Burial will follow in the Resthaven Cemetery at Jeff, KY.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Hubert’s Episcopal Church or Hospice of the Bluegrass.
