Obituary for Julia Johnson Barret

Julia Johnson Barret, age 95 of Hazard, KY, passed away on Thursday, May 4, 2017, at her home. She was the daughter of the late Joseph E. Johnson and the late Ada Julia Johnson. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Maxwell P. Barret; her son, Maxwell P. Barret Jr.; sisters: Christine J. McBrayer and Louise J. Pryor; as well as brothers, Joseph Johnson Jr., Richard Johnson, Edward Johnson and Mark Johnson.

She is survived by four daughters: Julia B. Mitchell of Hazard, KY, Carolyn B. May of Lexington, KY, Elizabeth B. Barret (Herby Smith) of Whitesburg, KY, Margaret B. Droste of Lexington, KY; daughter-in-law: Kendall S. Barret of Lexington, KY; thirteen grandchildren: Elizabeth B. Stilz (Coley) of Lexington, KY, Ann B. Wallin (Jason) of Lexington, KY, Lauren C. Barret of Portland, ME, Addison S. Barret of Lexington, KY, Peyton L. Mitchell, III (Tara) of Franklin, KY, Courtney M. Money (Mike) of Pendleton,SC, Max B. Mitchell (Brittany) of Hazard, KY, Erin M. Roth (Marc) of Lexington, KY, Barret L. May of Lexington, KY, Evan B. Smith (Jessica Branham) of Prestonsburg, KY, Ada J. Smith of Whitesburg, KY, Ryan L. Droste of Louisville, KY, Jessica B. Droste of Lexington, KY; fifteen great- grandchildren as well as a host of family and friends.

Julia was born In Lexington attending University High, Henry Clay High School and the University of Kentucky where she was a member of Tri Delta sorority.

She was a WWII bride, marrying Maxwell Barret in 1943. After his graduation from UK law school, they moved to Hazard where they raised their family.
She was a committed volunteer in the schools and for a number of years served as the first woman on the Hazard Independent School Board. She was active in First Presbyterian Church serving as Sunday school teacher and as an elder.


Being the matriarch of a large extended family, she was loved and revered. As a role model, she influenced many others by her intellect, grace, and nurturing spirit.
Her wit was a treasure and particularly when expressed through her poetry written for special occasions.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude for the excellent medical care provided by Dr. Deb Anderson and to the devoted caregivers Brenda Hensley, Elsie Jones, Gladys Wooton, Mary Lou Rogers, and Tasha Baker who provided constant loving care.

Pallbearers are Peyton Mitchell,III, Max Mitchell, Mike Money, Barret May, Marc Roth and Evan Smith.

Services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church on Broadway in Hazard, KY at 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 10, 2017, with Rev. Ellen Peach officiating. Burial will follow services at 3:00P.M. at The Lexington Cemetery, Lexington, KY. A reception will be held at Griffin Gate Clubhouse on Newtown Pike.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the First Presbyterian Church on 160 Broadway Street in Hazard, KY.

Arrangements are under the direction of Maggard Funeral Homes, Hazard, KY.
